ABAIR: Little John Nee / Hugh Cooney

Little John Nee and Hugh Cooney

Tickets: €10 (booking fee may apply)

A night of songs and stories from punk seanchas to stand-up folklore.

Acclaimed writer and theatre-maker Little John Nee shares a line-up with Wicklow comedian and storyteller Hugh Cooney.

Little John Nee is a writer and theatre-maker whose original works have been a distinctive presence in Irish theatre for more than four decades, developing a prolific repertoire of solo shows and collaborations. His work defies genre and dances between worlds; blending clown, lyrical monologue, original song, and quiet anarchy into something unmistakably his own—rooted in tradition but wildly imaginative.

His acclaimed plays include The Derry Boat (Helen Hayes Award nomination, Washington DC), The Mental, Johnny Patterson the Singing Irish Clown, Sparkplug (Irish Times Theatre Award, Prix Italia Special Mention), Radio Rosario, Tea Dance, Nettle Horse (2024), and Zeitgeist Jukebox (2025) “The Art of Gentle Punk” (2026) His work has toured widely and has been adapted for radio, film and publication, including A Donegal Trilogy (An Grianán Theatre, 2011).

Elected to Aosdána in 2016, he lives and works in the west of Ireland.

Hugh Cooney is an artist, comedian, storyteller and folklorist whose work blends surreal humour, modern-day folklore and performance. Infamous for early viral videos and multimedia shows, he has created and performed sell-out shows in venues across Ireland and internationally, exploring absurd characters and narratives through storytelling formats. He hosts the Folklord podcast, collecting and sharing myths, legends and contemporary tales with a playful twist, and his creative output spans live events, podcasts and spoken-word projects that weave folklore with comedy.

This event is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.
