Performing Panchari Melam, a traditional temple percussion ensemble from Kerala, which includes instruments such as the chenda, iathalam, kombu and kuzal. Panchari Melam follows a rhythmic structure based on a five-beat cycle and gradually increases in tempo and intensity. The melam progresses through 5 distinct stages (kalam)- each stage reducing the number of beats per cycle while proportionally increasing tempo, creating a controlled acceleration. The performance emphasises symmetry, calculated tempo transitions and tightly synchronised crescendo patterns, culminating in a climatic korvai-like conclustion executed with exact rhythmic resolution.
Panchari Melam is performed here under the leadership of Bindu Raman.
